It didn\u2019t get to cancel the dream.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<article class=\"jftj-retirement-story\">\n\n    <h2>We Had a Very Specific Picture of Retirement<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        Long before cancer became part of our vocabulary, Sue and I had a picture\n        in our heads of what the next chapter of life was going to look like.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        There was a motorhome in that picture.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A big one.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        There were open roads.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        National parks.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Long stretches of time when we didn&#8217;t have to hurry home because Monday\n        morning was waiting for us.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We had spent decades working, raising a family, taking care of responsibilities\n        and saying the word most people say when life is busy:\n    <\/p>\n\n    <blockquote>\n        <p><strong>Someday.<\/strong><\/p>\n    <\/blockquote>\n\n    <p>\n        Someday we&#8217;ll have more time.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Someday we&#8217;ll travel more.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Someday we&#8217;ll spend weeks instead of days somewhere.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Someday we&#8217;ll see Yellowstone.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        The Grand Canyon.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Alaska.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Someday we&#8217;ll stop planning the adventure and actually live it.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>This Wasn&#8217;t a Casual Dream<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        We weren&#8217;t simply saying, \u201cWouldn&#8217;t it be nice to own an RV?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We had researched it.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Budgeted for it.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Looked at motorhomes.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Thought about layouts.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Talked about routes.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Imagined what full-time or extended travel might actually look like.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        The motorhome represented something bigger than a vehicle.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        It represented freedom.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        It represented the chapter we thought was waiting for us after all the\n        chapters built around work and responsibility.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We thought we knew where the road was headed.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <div style=\"background:#f5f6f8;border-left:5px solid #d47a2a;                padding:24px 28px;margin:36px 0;border-radius:8px;\">\n\n        <p style=\"color:#d47a2a;font-weight:800;text-transform:uppercase;                  letter-spacing:1px;margin:0 0 8px;\">\n            The Dream\n        <\/p>\n\n        <p style=\"margin:0;font-size:1.15em;color:#082744;\">\n            <strong>\n                The motorhome was never really about the motorhome.\n                It was about finally having the freedom to go.\n            <\/strong>\n        <\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <h2>Then January Came<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        Cancer has a remarkable ability to take a calendar you thought you understood\n        and rewrite it almost overnight.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Suddenly the conversations were different.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Biopsy.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Gleason score.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Imaging.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Surgery.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Pathology.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        PSA.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Radiation.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Hormone therapy.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Follow-up.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        The calendar that had once contained possible routes across the country\n        now contained medical appointments.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And somewhere inside all of that was the motorhome dream.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Still there.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        But suddenly much farther away.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>We Never Actually Bought the Motorhome<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        There is an important part of our story that sometimes gets misunderstood.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Sue and I had not yet purchased the motorhome when cancer arrived.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        The dream was still in the planning stage.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A very real planning stage\u2014but planning nonetheless.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We had models in mind.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We had a timeline.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We knew what we thought retirement was going to look like.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And then, before we ever got to live that version of the dream,\n        the phone rang.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>For a While, the Question Became: Is This Still Realistic?<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        That&#8217;s a harder question than it sounds.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Because cancer doesn&#8217;t simply affect your body.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        It affects confidence.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Timing.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Money.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Energy.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        How far you want to be from your doctors.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        How comfortable you are making plans months from now.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And sometimes whether you want to let yourself get excited about something\n        that could still change.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Some weeks Sue and I talked about the RV dream as though cancer were simply\n        a detour.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Other weeks, it felt very far away.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Not gone.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Just distant.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>Then \u201cSomeday\u201d Started Sounding Different<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        There is something uncomfortable cancer forces you to confront.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Time was never guaranteed.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Not before cancer.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Not after cancer.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        The difference is that before cancer, it was easier to pretend otherwise.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        You could assume there would always be another summer.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Another vacation.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Another anniversary.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Another chance to take that trip.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Another year to finally do the thing you&#8217;ve been putting off.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Cancer made that assumption harder to maintain.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And eventually I realized something:\n    <\/p>\n\n    <blockquote>\n        <p><strong>Someday had become a dangerous word.<\/strong><\/p>\n    <\/blockquote>\n\n\n    <div style=\"background:#fff8f1;border-left:5px solid #d47a2a;                padding:26px 30px;margin:36px 0;border-radius:10px;\">\n\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 8px;color:#d47a2a;font-weight:800;                  text-transform:uppercase;letter-spacing:1px;\">\n            What Changed\n        <\/p>\n\n        <p style=\"margin:0;font-size:1.15em;color:#082744;\">\n            <strong>\n                Cancer didn&#8217;t teach us that life was short.\n                It made it much harder to keep pretending time was unlimited.\n            <\/strong>\n        <\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <h2>So We Started Looking at the Dream Differently<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        The original version was fairly simple.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Retire.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Get the motorhome.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Travel extensively.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Stay out as long as we wanted.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Come home when we felt like it.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Cancer introduced complications the original plan didn&#8217;t have.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        During active treatment, I can&#8217;t simply pretend the medical calendar doesn&#8217;t exist.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Ongoing monitoring matters.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Appointments matter.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Knowing where my medical team is matters.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        How I feel matters.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Flexibility matters much more than it did in the original plan.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        So eventually we reached a conclusion:\n    <\/p>\n\n    <blockquote>\n        <p><strong>The dream gets modified. It does not get canceled.<\/strong><\/p>\n    <\/blockquote>\n\n\n    <h2>Maybe Full-Time Isn&#8217;t the First Version Anymore<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        One of the changes we&#8217;ve talked about is beginning with extended trips\n        instead of immediately disappearing onto the road full-time.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        That gives us something important:\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        freedom and a medical anchor.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We can travel.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Explore.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Stay somewhere long enough to actually experience it.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        But also return when treatment or monitoring requires it.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        That isn&#8217;t the original plan.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        But I&#8217;m beginning to think one of the traps we fall into is believing\n        a dream only counts if it happens exactly the way we first imagined it.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>A Changed Dream Is Still a Dream<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe we don&#8217;t spend twelve months a year on the road.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe the first trips are shorter.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe routes get built around appointments.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe there are months when travel simply doesn&#8217;t make sense.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe we need more planning than the people parked next to us.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        None of that changes why we wanted to go in the first place.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still want to wake up somewhere we&#8217;ve never been.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still want to see the country through a windshield instead of a screen.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still want national parks.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Small towns.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Mountain roads.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Campgrounds.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Sunsets.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Coffee outside the motorhome in the morning.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And more ordinary days together that don&#8217;t revolve around cancer.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>The Places Are Still on the List<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        The Grand Canyon is still there.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Yellowstone is still there.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        The Sierra Nevadas are still there.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Alaska is still there.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And so is that promise Sue and I made to ourselves long before cancer\n        became part of the itinerary.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still intend to go.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>Some Days I Carry the Dream<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        Marriage looks different when uncertainty enters it.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Sue and I don&#8217;t always feel hopeful on the same day.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        There are days when I&#8217;m thinking too much about cancer and she&#8217;s the one\n        reminding me that we still have plans.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Other days, I am the one looking at routes, motorhomes and national parks\n        while she needs reassurance that the dream is still standing.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        I&#8217;ve come to think that&#8217;s one of the things a long marriage teaches you.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <blockquote>\n        <p>\n            <strong>\n                You take turns carrying the hope.\n            <\/strong>\n        <\/p>\n    <\/blockquote>\n\n    <p>\n        You don&#8217;t both have to feel strong every day.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        You simply try not to put the dream down at the same time.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Sue&#8217;s side of that journey is something we explored more deeply in\n        <a href=\"\/journal\/the-co-pilot\/\" data-lasso-id=\"174\"><strong>The Co-Pilot<\/strong><\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>The RV Dream Means Something Different Now<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        Before cancer, the motorhome represented retirement.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Today, it represents something else too.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Defiance might be too strong a word.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        But there is definitely a little bit of refusal in it.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A refusal to allow every conversation to be about cancer.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A refusal to put every plan on hold until someone promises us nothing\n        difficult will happen again.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A refusal to let uncertainty become the only thing determining what goes\n        on the calendar.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        The motorhome has become a reminder that we are still allowed to have a future.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>Living Now Doesn&#8217;t Mean Ignoring Reality<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        I want to make this distinction because \u201clive for today\u201d can become a clich\u00e9.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We aren&#8217;t pretending cancer isn&#8217;t serious.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We&#8217;re not ignoring treatment.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We&#8217;re not packing the RV tomorrow and disappearing thousands of miles away\n        without considering the medical realities.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Living now isn&#8217;t recklessness.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        It is making room for life alongside responsibility.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Treatment can be on the calendar.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        So can a trip.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A PSA test can matter.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        So can a sunset.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Both things can be true.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>The 90-Day Calendar Changed How We Plan<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        One of the biggest adjustments has been learning to think in shorter chapters.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Cancer monitoring can make it tempting to organize life around the next test.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        You start telling yourself:\n    <\/p>\n\n    <blockquote>\n        <p>\n            <strong>\n                We&#8217;ll decide after the next PSA.\n            <\/strong>\n        <\/p>\n    <\/blockquote>\n\n    <p>\n        Then there is another PSA.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And another.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Eventually you realize there may never be a point when the calendar contains\n        absolutely no uncertainty.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        I wrote more about that feeling in\n        <a href=\"\/journal\/the-90-day-clock\/\" data-lasso-id=\"175\"><strong>The 90-Day Clock<\/strong><\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        For travel, that means planning differently.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Not refusing to plan.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>The Route Can Change Without Losing the Destination<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        That may be the biggest retirement lesson cancer has taught me so far.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We tend to become attached not only to our dreams but to the exact route\n        we thought would take us there.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Retirement at a certain age.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A certain amount of money.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A certain kind of RV.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A certain start date.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A certain number of years on the road.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Then life changes something.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And because the original route is blocked, we start wondering whether the\n        destination is gone too.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe it isn&#8217;t.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe you simply need another road.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <div style=\"background:#f5f6f8;border-left:5px solid 0 8px;\">\n            The Retirement Lesson\n        <\/p>\n\n        <p style=\"margin:0;font-size:1.15em;color:#082744;\">\n            <strong>\n                Don&#8217;t confuse a changed route with a canceled destination.\n            <\/strong>\n        <\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <h2>We Are Still Planning<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        That may be the most important sentence in this entire story.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We are still planning.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Not pretending.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Not guaranteeing.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Planning.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        There&#8217;s a difference.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still talk about the motorhome.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still talk about where we want to go.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still imagine what mornings on the road might look like.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        We still have places we haven&#8217;t crossed off the list.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And perhaps most importantly, cancer has not been given veto power over\n        whether we are allowed to dream.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <h2>What I Hope You Take From This Retirement Story<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n        You don&#8217;t need cancer to understand this lesson.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Maybe your retirement plan changed because of money.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A job.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        A spouse&#8217;s health.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Aging parents.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Family responsibilities.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        An unexpected move.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Or simply because the person you are today isn&#8217;t the same person who created\n        the original plan ten years ago.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Changing the dream is not the same as giving it up.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Sometimes maturity is recognizing that the original version no longer fits.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And courage is building another version anyway.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Sue and I don&#8217;t know exactly what our eventual RV life will look like.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        But we know this:\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        There are roads we still want to travel.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Places we still want to see.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        Memories we still want to make.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n        And as long as we have the opportunity to keep moving,\n        we intend to take it.\n    <\/p>\n\n\n    <div style=\"background:#fff8f1;border-left:5px solid
